New Armor System

huge game-changing update! -We NEED your feedback!

Before we start!

Please, we need your feedback! Do you find this game interesting? Do you have any comments / suggestions? At this moment, I am working on this game by myself, and motivation is hard to come by. Any type of shout-out will or even if one person anticipates or like the idea of this game would be great and highly appreciated. Please, leave a comment, or tweet at us on twitter @_isolatedPixel , no, we do not have a “bot” on twitter, it’s just me, the programmer and only developer at this moment of this game until I achieve a certain point where the game is good to go and just needs more assets.

Who is making this?

Right now, it’s just one person, me! I’m the programmer, and right now “artist” too, even though my art skill are horrible… but I did manage to draw this character!… yea, it could be better, anyways, everything in this update is made by me, and myself only. My friends who were working on this with me are busy with College work at this moment, so yea, I’m on this solo mode. My hope is for the game to get enough popularity that I could start paying other people to help me out and make this game real! I program this using LWJGL and Java, I have about 5+years of experience with java, and about 3 of them were messing around with code and making random games, however, they all ended up in the drawer, but not this one! I’m going all out with this project! so bear with me!

Now for the updates!

New Sprites

Changed sprites! we have different sprites now; no, they are NOT perfect, I drew them by myself, and I am nothing close to an artist, I’m just a programmer with a bamboo tablet… and apparently too much time at my hands… haha the following screenshot is directly from the game.

New Character Model

The character in this GIF is holding a basic weapon, and no clothes… but wait!
I also added an “armor” capability, which means that you character can now wear clothes!

Wearing armor

Now as you can see, the clothes you wear actually change your stats, along with you appearance! the stats are another big update!

Stats

Stats alter the way the character feels and the way you will perceive your enjoyment and style of your gameplay. This will all depend,

Adding Stats

  • if you upgrade your STR (Strength) you will do more damage with physical objects and be able to carry heavier equipment like armor or weapons. This will also increase your Health pool!
  • If you upgrade your AGL (Agility) you will do more damage with precision base weapons like throw-able shuriken or other long rage abilities, it will also make your base speed faster and ability to jump higher.
  • If you upgrade your INTL (Intellect / Intelligence) you’ll do more damage with magical attacks, and will depend on them. it will also increase your Mana pool!

These stats will have more impact in the game later on, at this moment this is all we added to each individual stat.

If you noticed, there is also a “Crit Chance” which will tell you what are your odds of hitting a critical hit, and “critical DMG” which will say how much bonus damage it will do in addition to it’s base damage.

Equipment

Your equipment now carries stats along with it! Each piece of clothing, or weapon, can carry stats to boost your base stats (will be indicated as “(+x)”, where x is the amount total from your armor/weapons.) in the following GIF you can see how my bonus stats change when I switch from the “M(agic)” marked weapon to the “P(hysical)” marked weapon.

Changing Weapons

Projectiles

There are 3 different types of projectiles at this moment, physical “projectile” which is a slashing sprite, Magical projectile which is a light blue ball of magic, and a ninja star projectile for ranged weapon.

Magical:

Magic Attack

this is relatively slower than the other projectiles, because we wanted it to feel “calmer” than the faster throwing “ninja” style of ranged weaponry. of course, there will be more types of magical attacks later on.

Physical:

Physical Attack

this is a simple slash img, the color will change depending on different variables in the future.

Ranged:

Ranged Attack

this is a fast paced weapon, throwing some throwing stars like a ninja!

The different weapon types are not balanced at this moment, but they each take their damage from different stats. we will add more weapon types and skills in the near future. for now this is just testing.

Thats it!

That’s it for this update, this is not all of what we worked on, but these articles take a heck of a lot of time to make, and this is without adding an edited version of gameplay… which will be included in the next article covering more of what had changed!

Again, please, comment, follow our project if you like where it’s going, we are going to scratch the name and think of a new one, we are working on a lot of modding tools for the modding community to be able to make your OWN adventures in this game with ease.

Game Dev – Project DG V. 0.0.4.X

Game Dev Log – Project DG 0.0.4.x

So, lately we started  “twitting…” stuff… well… yea… we never actually used twitter except for publishing our articles on there, but now… i got addicted… I twit like… anything… lol. Go follow us @_isolatedPixel For updates on versions that we didn’t post on here yet, and get random leaks… there are even some there right now that I took while programming the game!…

Ok, now back to the subject… Version 0.0.4.x, Well, there isn’t that much to it, well as far as you guys can “see” but it goes as follows:

Indie Dev Log – 0.0.4.0

There weren’t many edits here, but we did tweak up some stuff and add a little bit.

    Fluid Camera

We added fluidity to the camera, meaning it is not “locked on” the character and follows it keeping it at the center, the camera now keeps a little delay and “follows” the character. It makes the camera feel neater. Well in my opinion at least… lol

    Bull…

You may be asking yourself… what’s up with that bull… and where did our beloved Baby Chicken disappeared to?? Well, don’t worry, I was just testing it for future purposed, they will both be place holders for other stuff.

    HUD

We started working on HUD for the game, but for now it is on the same layer as the game itself, so the HUD will remain at the same spot when the character moves, meaning that it acts like a game object and would simply get out of your point of view… ehh… you’ll see what I mean in the GIF. Oh, and side-note, all of the GIFs have low fps compared to the actual game, it is much smoother in the game, you will see when I publish the video, which will probably be tomorrow!

Project DG 0.0.4.0

Fluid Camera, Bull, and HUD

Indie Dev Log – 0.0.4.1

In this version, we added camera layers, and a basic AI!

Camera Layers

So there are actually 2 layers now, even though it could look like three… first layer, is the background (No more green screen!!) second layer, is the game, third layer is basically re-using the 1st layer to draw on top of the whole game. Since the 1st layer isn’t moving, well for now, we are just re-using the coordinates from it.

AI

The AI is fairly simple for now, the character chooses random direction (Left or Right) or to rest for a bit, and for what distance to do that. There is also a target system, once you hit the enemy, it will try to follow you, the enemy cant damage you yet bit it does freak out in order to reach you…

V0.0.4.1

V0.0.4.1 Added AI and fixed HUD (Camera Layers)

Indie Dev Log – 0.0.4.2

Nothing too big on this one, we just tweaked the AI and reduced speed. OH AND THE BABY CHICK RETURNED!!

Return of The Baby Chick

YES YOU ARE SEEING RIGHT, the baby chicken is BACK! in the beginning I was just testing out the bull sprite sheet, it was supposed to be part of the old game originally but was never added, we are going to use it for testing! Isn’t that exciting?…. no..?. really… Ok…

AI Tweaks

We fixed the speed of the AI and there were sometimes where it would just pick left or idle, meaning no moving right unless he hits a wall… so yea… that was fixed! And the AI is now MULTIPLYING …. for testing purposes, once the enemy is killed (10 pig shots.. lol) he will die and summon 2 more! for the fun of never ending BULLS following you!

Game Dev Log – Project DG

Summary

We divided version 0.0.3 into 3 parts, as we started out with the first revision, however we kept on tweaking it, but it wasn’t big enough of a change to call it a separate version :P. Ver. 0.0.3.X focused on platforms, collision detection, and camera control! which in my opinion changed the game a lot and made it somewhat “playable.”

0.0.3.0 – Platforms

We had to program the platforms from scratch, meaning planning out their hierarchy and their structure, and in order to make the future easier, we decided to make a class called “world” or “map” in the future which will hold all of the platforms, and each of the platforms will hold objects such as dropped items, enemies, NPCs, and others.

platform-demo

0.0.3.0 Platform demonstration

0.0.3.1

In this version, we tweaked the collision detection between the platforms and the objects, we also added more “dropped items.” The collision detection in 0.0.3.0 were quite buggy, sometimes the character would just slide off the platform before it was even at the edge (if you look closely you will see it at the gif file of 0.0.3.0). So we fixed that issue, we also checked the platform’s ability to hold dropped objects and update them within itself, so basically all of the “floating toilets” you see are objects that are handled within the platform itself! (and yes… its a floating toilet… i was bored 😛 )

0.0.3.1 platforms demonstration

Demonstrating platforms and dropped items project DG 0.0.3.1

0.0.3.2

Wheew…. ok… this… this is a big one 😀
Where do I start..? lol
Well, first, We created the first moving camera! now, the camera basically follows the character  and keeps it in the center, however it will not go underneath the first platform or to the left of the first platform (which is the origin of the coordinate system (0,0)). Next, we added more platforms for the first actual testing area!
there is one problem though, well one very VISIBLE problem lol, since the background is being drawn on the same layer as the game for now, it is moving with the character, exposing the empty green “canvas” behind it… this will be fixed once the background will get it’s own layer though! so nothing to worry about!

Project DG V. 0.0.1 Game Dev Log

Game Dev Log – Project Name “Project DG”

Why Project DG

We decided to call this Game Dev Log Project, Project DG, whichc stands for Project Dream Game, as we do not have a set name for it yet.

Game Dev Log Version 0.0.1 Update

As for the project update, we now integrated some Trigonometry into the game, the projectiles, pigs, are being shot relative to the character, the chicken in this case, according to the aim set by the mouse and represented with the arrow.
We also added a set target (the faint looking character floating there) for now which changes position once destroyed, and for this we needed to add collision detection. We decided to make the collision detection for this quite “dirty” for now, as it is just for testing.
The bottom part, is just testing the opacity levels for the HUD screen which is soon to be.

INDIE DB!

We created a INDIE DB account and uploaded stuff to it! We will keep both of these updated, we will share a link once we are approved!

LWJGL Game Project

New Game – no Name Yet Version 0.0.0

So, after trying out the android market, we have seen that it had basically been taken over by the “Big Companies” and simply gave up on the older project after publishing, however it will remain published on there. However, we are taking that older Android Game project as good experience as it taught as a lot about game planning and what to do and expect.

Now, for the new game, we decided to use LWJGL as the basic tool for our development and build a “game engine” around it for our convenience. The target of our game is Windows OS, Mac OS, and Linux OS. We are again using java in this programming as this is the programming language we are most comfortable with. We will be re-using the sprites from the old game just for place holders until we get the new sprites ready.

The new game will be a 2D Side-Scroller RPG. This kind of game had been one of my dreams, personally, and what got me into programming. for the longest time, I dreamed of making a game like this, but only now do I find myself with enough tools in my toolbox to tackle this kind of job.

We will update this website with every major update we do to the new game project.

Another update, we have a new logo coming up, we will upload and change our logo as soon as it comes out and share it with all of you! We think you’ll love it!

Wish us luck guys!
